ISRAEL – EUROPEAN RELATIONS

ISRAEL – EUROPEAN RELATIONS

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Europe, with its normative, economic, and political power, plays an important role in the Western coalition of states of which Israel aspires to be a part. In addition to Israel’s geographic, cultural, social, and economic proximity to the European Union and its member states, partnerships with Europe are critical to Israel’s national security and prosperity as a state.

In this program, we examine trends and dynamics in Europe, the relationship between Europe and the United States, and Europe’s influence on the Middle East — both on the state level and within the European Union — with the goal of strengthening Israel’s bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the continent. We aim to mitigate negative trends and vulnerabilities in Israel–EU relations, while expanding and leveraging the many opportunities for cooperation, particularly in the current era of shifting global dynamics.

“Another consequence of the damage to Russia's image as a global power is the improvement of Iran's position in their bilateral relations. Tehran may feel emboldened to make greater demands of Moscow in their cooperation discussions.”

“Poland is strengthening its position within both the European and transatlantic blocs and is gaining growing influence over processes and decisions within the EU. Israel should designate Poland as a priority country for deepening cooperation as part of building a broader Israeli partnership network".

“It is in Israel’s interest to position itself as a bridge between the United States and Europe, based on the understanding that being perceived as a valuable asset by the American administration is essential for protecting Israeli interests across various arenas, as well as for expanding benefits and cooperation with Europe”.

"The composition of the new commission and the expanded influence of von der Leyen present many opportunities for Israel to improve its relations with the EU. This will require close personal connections with the new commissioners and a comprehensive effort to secure long-term agreements with the Union.”

"Israel is well positioned to serve as an inter-regional "bridge" between Europe, the USA and the Middle East. This will require Israel to situate itself as a mediator and maintain strong ties with the new power factors in Europe, to be useful for the western security ambitions and to play a role in advancing stability in the Middle East. “An upgraded German Israeli partnership can lay the foundations to the new regional dynamics and propose a new role for Germany in the Middle East. The new German government must adopt a contemporary and productive approach to the region”. (1.2.25)

“Precisely in one of the most challenging periods for Israel-Europe relations, when Israel's status in the Western world is at a low, it must strive to improve partnerships by focusing on shared destiny in dealing with common challenges and focusing on overlapping interests." (27.1.2025

“Similarly to Ukraine – who is fighting her enemy with the West's backing – Israel too is not alone. Both countries are in the midst of writing their own “war story.” Therefore, especially at this time, it is important for Israel to learn and apply lessons from Ukraine’s story.” (3.9.2024)
